Why the Cheapest Dedicated Tasting in Rome Is Also the Best Value Per Wine
The tasting we recommend on a budget — and when a wine bar beats any booking on price.
The easiest way to overpay for wine in Rome is to book the wrong format rather than the wrong tour: a long dinner walk is great value as dinner and poor value as a wine lesson. Sort that out first, then the price follows. Our pick for anyone counting euros is the speakeasy tasting at Cabaret Voltaire on Via Panisperna in Monti, a few minutes north of the Colosseum: three Italian wines from small producers, each with a food sample, a guide who explains them, and no more than six guests. It is the cheapest dedicated wine tasting we found in Rome, and no tasting we compared costs less per wine. Spend more only for something specific: six wines explained, a cave, a full meal or a private car. If you already know what you like and just want a glass, a wine bar such as Enoteca Ferrara is cheaper than any booking.

The Monti Speakeasy Tasting, Step by Step: 3 Wines, 3 Bites, 6 Guests at Most
From the door on Via Panisperna to the last glass at Cabaret Voltaire — what the lowest price in the lineup actually buys.
-
Find Cabaret Voltaire on Via Panisperna
The tasting takes place at Cabaret Voltaire Roma, Via Panisperna 87, in Monti, the neighbourhood immediately north of the Colosseum. That makes it easy to fit after an afternoon at the Forum. One reviewer described the street as a quiet part of Rome, away from the main crowds.
-
Settle into the speakeasy
The bar is set up as a speakeasy, with artworks on display, music and, in one reviewer’s words, “cosy corners”. With six guests at most, the host can answer questions properly — the same cap as the VinoRoma class in Prati, which costs more than twice as much.
-
Taste three wines from small Italian wineries
The guide pours three wines from small and renowned Italian wineries and explains how each is made. One reviewer said the host also covered the history of Italy’s regions and grapes. Three is enough to compare a white with a red; it is not a full survey of Italian wine.
-
Pair each glass with a food sample
Each wine comes with a food sample; reviewers mention Italian cheeses and cured meats. Three samples are a snack, not dinner, so plan a meal afterwards in Monti, or book an evening food and wine tour that replaces dinner.
-
Leave with the bill already settled
After about 90 minutes you are done. The listed price covers the guide, three wines and three food samples; tips are not included and are optional. Under-18s cannot join, so this is an adults’ evening out rather than a family plan.

What Pushes a Rome Wine Tasting Price Up: More Wines, a Meal, Privacy, the Room
From the Monti speakeasy to the Pantheon wine and dine — where the extra dollars go.
Six explained costs more than three
The VinoRoma class in Prati pours six wines for $89, about $15 a wine; the Monti speakeasy pours three for $33. The per-wine price moves only a few dollars — you pay for the longer session and the teaching. If you want to compare regions, six is worth it; to taste a white and a red, three is enough.
Dinner doubles the bill
The candlelit Pigneto cave ($128) and the wine and dine near the Pantheon ($162) both pour three or four wines but include a meal, which is why they cost two to five times a seated tasting. Compare them with a restaurant dinner plus a tasting, not with a tasting alone.
Private roughly doubles it again
The private Testaccio cave tasting is $114 and the private tour by car $167, against $60 for the shared Testaccio cave tasting. Both private listings have only one or two reviews so far. Read our private wine tasting guide before paying the premium.
A cistern or cave adds little
Settings cost less than you might expect: the Fabullus cellar, built from a 1st-century Roman cistern, starts at $42 for a tasting, and the cave under Monte Testaccio at $60. A historic room is often the best-value upgrade — see our underground tastings.

How we worked it out: per-wine cost is the per-person “from” price divided by the number of wines the listing states, rounded to the dollar. * Listings with several options: the from-price divided by the smallest flight named, since GetYourGuide does not say which option the from-price belongs to; larger flights cost more. Meals and food are not subtracted. Prices are the figures GetYourGuide showed in US dollars on 15 October 2026 and change with the option and date.

“This was a lovely experience. Nestled in a quiet part of Rome, away from the hustle and bustle, this Speakeasy was filled with mystery and atmosphere; beautiful art and cosy corners. Two wines and ten Italian products, then gelato
Cooking Italy’s Trastevere tasting pours two Italian wines beside ten food tastings — 30-year aged balsamic, pesto Genovese, Asiago, buffalo mozzarella, truffle honey — then walks you to a gelato. More food than the speakeasy, fewer wines.

Every tasting we compared, sorted by price, with what each band buys and what a glass costs without a booking — checked 15 October 2026.
Budget: $33–47 for a seated tasting
Under $50 you get a real tasting, usually an hour to 90 minutes, with one to four wines and anything from a few bites to a cheese board. The cheapest per wine are the Monti speakeasy and the Lazio flight at Trapizzino, both about $11 a glass.
- Speakeasy tasting, Monti — from $33. 3 wines and 3 food samples, about $11 a wine; max 6.
- Trastevere wine tasting with gelato — from $36. 2 wines with 10 food tastings and gelato; a pairing more than a tasting.
- Fabullus guided tasting — from $42. From the smallest flight up to 6 wines, prosecco included; bread and taralli only.
- Lazio wines at La Vineria di Trapizzino — from $44. 4 Lazio wines with a sommelier, a trapizzino and a supplì; about $11 a wine.
- Taste’Accio PDO tasting, Testaccio — from $45. 2 glasses of Lazio wine with rare cheeses and cured meats in the cave.
- Lazio cheese tasting with wine — from $47. 8 cheeses, Roman pizza and one glass — a cheese tasting first.
Mid-range: $55–89 for more wines or a better room
This band buys either more wine — six on the VinoRoma class — or a setting: the 1st-century cistern under Trastevere or the cave under Monte Testaccio, an artificial hill of an estimated 53 million broken amphorae. It is the best value if you want to learn something; our best wine tastings in Rome ranking weighs these against each other.
- Fine wine tasting & food pairing — from $55. Cheeses, cured meats, truffles and 30-year balsamic, with top-ups offered and a dinner option.
- Testaccio cave tasting — from $60. 4 Lazio wines and a cured meat and cheese board, about $15 a wine; max 10.
- Fabullus cellar food and wine pairing — from $65. Prosecco plus 2–4 wines by option, with a Slow Food board, in a Roman cistern.
- VinoRoma sommelier class, Prati — from $89. 6 wines from across Italy over 2 hours, about $15 a wine; max 6.
Top end: $114–167 for a meal or privacy
Above $100 you are paying for dinner or a private group, not for rarer wine. Three of these four listings have fewer than ten reviews, so read the inclusions closely.
- Private Testaccio cave tasting — from $114. Welcome drink, private tasting in the cave and a pastry at Pasticceria Barberini; 2 hours.
- Candlelit cave, Pigneto — from $128. 3 wines and a light dinner with pasta and dessert; 2.5 hours.
- Wine and dine near the Pantheon — from $162. 4 wines including prosecco, a digestif and a 3-course meal; max 10.
- Private wine tour by car — from $167. Prosecco, white, red and a liqueur at viewpoints, driven by Mercedes; one review so far.
Food walks with wine: $57–99, dinner included
Food tours that pour wine cost about the same as a mid-range tasting but run three to four hours and replace dinner, from the Trionfale and Prati food and wine walk ($57) to the Jewish Quarter night walk ($99). They pour wine with the food rather than explaining a flight. Our evening wine tours guide compares them; the Trastevere guide covers the walks and tastings in that neighbourhood.
What a wine bar costs instead
At Enoteca Ferrara in Trastevere a glass is roughly €5–12 and an aperitivo glass with a plate around €7–14 at the time of writing; Roscioli near Campo de’ Fiori is worth booking ahead. Three glasses on your own cost less than the cheapest tasting. What you give up is the explanation and the pairing — fine if you already know Italian wine, a loss if you do not. Our beginners’ guide explains what a tasting adds, and Italian wines to try in Rome tells you what to order at the bar.
Dollars, euros and what you actually pay
The prices on this page are the US-dollar “from” figures GetYourGuide showed on 15 October 2026, per person, for the cheapest option and date. Italy uses the euro, so the wine bar prices above are in euros and we have not converted them; GetYourGuide can show other currencies, and your card provider may add a conversion fee. Rooms and dates change prices too: check the option you pick, especially on listings with several flights. Pairing-led tastings are compared on our wine and cheese page, and cold-month options in the winter guide.
The short rule: count the wines, check whether dinner is included, then compare the price. A $89 tasting with six wines and a $99 walk with dinner are both fair; they are just not the same thing.
The Colosseum and the Roman Forum a few minutes from Monti, the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel, an evening in Trastevere, or a half-day trip to Frascati in the Castelli Romani — four things to budget for alongside a Rome wine tasting.
Rome Wine Tasting Prices: Frequently Asked Questions
What it costs, the cheapest option, wine bar or tasting, why some cost over $100, food tours, tips and private tastings.
How much does a wine tasting in Rome cost?
Dedicated tastings on GetYourGuide run from $33 for three wines and three food samples in a Monti speakeasy to $167 for a private tasting by car. Most seated tastings sit between $33 and $89; candlelit caves, restaurant pairings and private formats cost $114–167. Food walks that include wine cost $57–99. All are per-person “from” prices checked on 15 October 2026.
What is the cheapest wine tasting in Rome?
Of the tastings we compared, the cheapest dedicated one is the speakeasy tasting at Cabaret Voltaire in Monti, from $33 for three wines and three food samples, capped at six guests. Per wine it works out at about $11, level with the four-wine Lazio tasting at La Vineria di Trapizzino in Trastevere (from $44), which has only two reviews so far.
Is a wine tasting cheaper than going to a wine bar in Rome?
No. A glass at a good Roman wine bar such as Enoteca Ferrara is roughly €5–12 at the time of writing, so three glasses on your own cost less than the cheapest tasting. A tasting charges for the explanation, the food pairing, a small group and often a setting you could not enter alone, such as a Roman cistern or a cave under Monte Testaccio.
Why do some Rome wine tastings cost over $100?
Four things push the price up: more wines, a meal, privacy and the setting. The $162 wine and dine near the Pantheon includes a three-course meal with four wines; the $128 candlelit Pigneto cave includes a light dinner; the $114 Testaccio cave tasting is private; and the $167 private tour drives you between viewpoints. You are paying for dinner or exclusivity, not better wine.
Are food tours with wine better value than wine tastings?
As dinner, yes: $57–99 buys three to four hours, ten to twenty food tastings and wine poured alongside, which replaces a restaurant meal. As a way to learn about wine, no: nobody pours a structured flight or explains each glass. Count the wines on the listing before comparing prices.
Are Rome wine tasting prices per person?
Yes. Every price on this page is the per-person “from” figure GetYourGuide showed in US dollars on 15 October 2026. The “from” price is the cheapest option and date; listings with several options, such as the Fabullus cellar or the six-wine flight in the same cellar, cost more for the larger flights.
Do I need to tip on a wine tasting in Rome?
Tips are not included on the speakeasy tasting, the Fabullus cellar tasting or several of the food walks, and they are optional. Nothing on the listings we read sets an amount, so it is entirely up to you.
Is a private wine tasting in Rome worth the price?
Only if privacy is the point. The private formats we found cost $114–167 per person and have one or two reviews each. A small group is cheaper: the VinoRoma class and the Monti speakeasy both cap at six guests, for $89 and $33.
